Stifling Defense Gives Ward Melville Ninth Win

The Ward Melville Patriots hosted NY powerhouse Garden City Saturday, April 20th, in an epic non-league boy’s lacrosse matchup.

Ward Melville (9-0) has come up big this season, while also climbing the DigitalSports National Rankings to #7 overall.  This Patriots team has averaged 15 goals each game after 8 contests, and have outscored their opponents 120 to 39 so far.  Ward Melville is known for its fierce offensive attack, but it was their defense that stifled the Garden City Trojans, handing the Patriots another win at home with a 7-3 final score.

When the whistle blew, both teams played an aggressive and strategic game.  Garden City played a solid defense, not allowing the offensively talented Patriots many scoring opportunities.  However, with the opportunities they were given Ward Melville headed to the locker room at halftime with a 2-1 lead over the defending state champions.

Unfortunately, Ward Melville surrendered the lead when Justin Guterding and Lucas Clay of the Trojans scored back-to-back goals win the middle of the third quarter to go up 3-2. Luckily for the Patriots, Christian Mazzone tied the game at 3 moments later to make for a nail-biter in the fourth quarter.

This is the first time this season that Ward Melville had not been leading by multiple points going into the fourth quarter.  For Ward Melville net minder, Dan Nemirov, there would be a lot of pressure to keep the ball out of their goal.  Ward Melville’s Jake Kepes found the back of the net early in the fourth quarter for Ward Melville, who notched three more as Garden City failed to get the ball past Nemirov. Shot after shot, Nemirov notched big save after big save.  The defense stifled the Trojans offensive attack not allowing them to score for the rest of the matchup.

The Ward Melville Patriots would take the win 7-3 at home as time expired.  This is their ninth win added their perfect (9-0) start to the 2013 season.  Ward Melville now sits at the #7 spot on the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings, and look to move further up as they advance this season.  Ward Melville looks to take one Northport this Tuesday, April 23rd, as the Tigers look to threaten the Patriots perfect record.

Game Notes:

Christian Mazzone scored game high 3 goals.

Jack Bruckner scored 1 goal and tallied 2 assists.

Danny Bucaro and Brendan Hegarty scored 1 goal and also tallied an assist each .
