Ward Melville Celebrates Their Championship Win

Posted On: Friday, May 31, 2013

Ward Melville can finally call themselves champions again after waiting thirteen years to get the Class ‘A’ Suffolk County title.  They had a long hard season, reaching #1 on Digital Sports rankings, playing an undefeated season, and being named the nations #1 ranked team, they deserved it.  The Ward Melville Patriots held on for the win against the Smithtown West Bulls on Wednesday, May 29th, with a final of 11-6.

Although the Ward Melville boys had reached the finals 36 out of 45 seasons, they had not won the title since 2000.  They were revved and ready to take down the Bulls and it was displayed throughout the game as they were in the lead most of the time.  In the first quarter, both teams were tied 4-4.  Not until 11 seconds left in the second quarter were the Patriots able to take the plunge when Christian Mazzone scored to make it 5-4 to end the half.  As the second half began, Ward Melville placed four goals on the board for a 9-4 lead only to finish off the game with two more for both teams so Ward Melville could celebrate the sweet victory.

The team will compete in the Long Island Championships at Hofstra on Saturday, June 1st, against Massapequa. Congratulations, Ward Melville Lacrosse!
