2014 Preview: Ward Melville Lacrosse

Posted On: Saturday, March 01, 2014
By: eshields

Last season, Ward Melville finished its 2013 regular season campaign with a perfect 19-0 record. They were uncontested all season as they steam rolled all obstacles in their way (Smithtown West 11-6, Massapequa 12-3, and finally West Genesee 16-4 for the NY State Crown. Ward Melville finished with a 22-0 record which landed them the No.1 spot on the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings.

The WM Patriots were not considered a state favorite before the 2013 season.  Known as an elite scholastic program for many years, having won eight state titles, but the 2013 team may top them all.

It is now time for the 2014 to kick off, and Ward Melville find themselves in a similar position.  They now have holes at mid field with graduating Jack Bruckner and Christian Mazzone, and a gaping hole in the net with the loss of graduated Daniel Nemirov, all superstar players for the 2013 Patriot team.  They will also start the season without long time coach Mike Hoppey.  New Head Coach Jay Negus, a 1995 Ward Melville graduate will be leading the way for this 2014 squad.

The 2014 Patriots will be a young team, returning four starters, two on offense and two on defense.

Juniors Tom Reilly and Mike Cirrone with anchor the defense, while seniors Tom Moore, Mike Troy, John Grauwiler and Sophomore John Day are all looking to contribute.  On offense the Patriots are returning two key starters in Juniors Dan Bucaro and Jake McCulloch on attack, with leader ship roles being filled by seniors Conor McAvoy and Patrick Roarty.
