On April 10, Ward Melville lost its first game of the season in a heartbreaking defeat to unranked Connetquot. The Patriots, who entered the game ranked 43rd in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings and 12th in New York, were more than disappointed in the outcome, but welcomed the chance to get back in the win column.
That opportunity came the very next day against Yorktown, 14th in the nation and 3rd in the state. Ward Melville anticipated a tough game, but with a second half when everything seemed to go right for the Patriots, Melville walked away with an emphatic 14-5 victory.
Yorktown made its presence known early, scoring the game’s first two goals. By the half the Huskers led 4-3. Jake McCulloch scored all three of Melville’s goals.
After a fairly even first half, the game quickly changed in the third quarter with Ward Melville picking up all of the momentum. The Patriots struck twice early, followed by a goal from Yorktown, tying the game at 5-a-side.
From that point on, the game was all Melville as the Patriots closed out the contest with nine unanswered goals.
McCulloch finished the game with an incredible six goals. Dan Bucaro quarterbacked the offense with six assists while picking up a goal himself.
Now back on the winning side, Ward Melville prepares to host Lindenhurst on April 14.
